Now that Juneteenth has been declared a federal holiday, what are you doing to celebrate? As a Black person in America married to a Black man with two Black sons, we have always recognized the day that Africans in America were emancipated from slavery. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was officially declared in 1863, are we even free? But that is a conversation for another time. James Baldwin said it best, “To be Black and conscious in America is to be in a constant state of rage.” That quote is 60 years old and still reigns true today.
Sometimes you just want to take a break from the weight of the world and celebrate how far you have come. To that point, let’s celebrate in the way that Black folks know best – good food, good drinks, and dope music. I have my go-to cocktails and music, but when I’m looking for something mouth-watering to eat, I always check out the latest recipe from The Kitchenista Diaries. (I highlighted her lemon-pepper wing recipe back in 2019) You can tell how much love she pours into her recipes by watching her videos on Instagram. Everything she makes looks absolutely delicious. I just made her pasta salad (I added shrimp) for a Memorial Day BBQ, and it was amazing. I also made wraps with collard greens leaves using her recipe and they elevated my lunch to the next level. I can’t wait to try her other recipes this summer.
Below are a few more from The Kitchenista that I am excited to try. What are you doing to celebrate US today?
