Here we go again. There is a rumor going around that Issa Rae is interested in a Set It Off remake. Are you here for it? I’m personally on the fence…Set it Off is a classic film in Black cinema, and it needs to stay untouched. But if anyone is going to remake the movie, I’m glad someone of color; especially a woman; is taking on the task. If this is going to be a true remake (which it has to be since the majority of the cast dies at the end), I have some thoughts on the cast. What do you think? Are you here for the remake? Who would you cast?
Jada Pinkett Smith as Stony
Since Jada Pinkett Smith’s character Stony was of petite stature with a grand presence, she needs someone that can fill those same shoes. She was also the only surviving cast member of the four girls, so the actor needs to be able to bear that weight of the role as well. I love the way Lil Mama filled Left Eye’s shoes in CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story and Quinta Brunson has more than proved that she is capable of drawing an audience with her role in HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show.
Queen Latifah as Cleo
The way in which Cleo (played by Queen Latifah) went out in this movie needs to be reenacted by a skilled actress. Danielle Brooks acted her ass off in the last few seasons of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and proved that she can handle Cleo’s final scene. I am also a fan of Ester Dean in front of the camera as an actress, so I wouldn’t mind seeing her in this role.
Vivica A. Fox as Frankie
Frankie’s spicy character played by Vivica A. Fox could be handled by Karrueche Tran or Chloe Bailey. Karrueche has proved that she is more than capable with her role in TNT’s Claws, and Chloe can definitely handle Frankie’s shoes with the sass she brings on Freeform’s Grown-ish.
Kimberly Elise as Tisean (T.T.)
T.T.’s sweet yet fierce character was originally played by Kimberly Elise and I feel like the role can be reprised by Antoinette Robertson of Netflix’s Dear White People. I could also see Halle Bailey in this role as she always seems to be cast alongside her sister Chloe.
Blair Underwood as Keith
Last but not least, the chocolate-coated shoes of Keith, played by Blair Underwood should be filled by Derek Luke or Lance Gross.
